HOYA MiYOSMART: A Smarter Way to Manage Myopia in Children

Helping slow myopia progression while providing clear vision. Learn how HOYA MiYOSMART lenses with D.I.M.S. Technology work for children.

Helping slow myopia progression while providing clear vision Myopia, commonly known as short-sightedness, is becoming increasingly common among children. While traditional spectacle lenses can correct blurry distance vision, they do not specifically address the progression of myopia. This is where HOYA MiYOSMART comes in. Developed by HOYA Vision Care in collaboration with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, MiYOSMART was introduced in 2018 and was the first spectacle lens developed using Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (D.I.M.S.) Technology to manage myopia progression. Today, MiYOSMART is supported by a growing body of clinical research and is designed to help children see clearly while simultaneously helping to slow the progression of myopia.

How does MiYOSMART work?

MiYOSMART uses HOYA’s patented D.I.M.S. Technology. Unlike a conventional single-vision lens, which is designed primarily to provide clear vision, MiYOSMART combines two optical zones within the same lens. The clear vision zone provides the child’s normal prescription correction, allowing them to see clearly. The treatment zone contains many small segments that create a controlled myopic defocus signal in front of the retina. This is designed to help regulate excessive eye growth, which is associated with the progression of myopia. The result is a spectacle lens that works in two ways at the same time: correcting vision and helping to manage myopia progression.

What did the clinical study find?

MiYOSMART’s technology has been extensively studied, including a 2-year randomized, double-masked clinical trial conducted in Hong Kong involving children aged 8–13 with myopia. The study compared children wearing D.I.M.S. spectacle lenses with children wearing standard single-vision spectacle lenses. After two years, the children wearing D.I.M.S. lenses experienced approximately 60% less myopia progression on average compared with those wearing standard single-vision lenses. The study also found approximately 60% less axial elongation, meaning less lengthening of the eye, which is an important factor associated with myopia progression. The study was published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology, providing peer-reviewed clinical evidence for the use of D.I.M.S. spectacle lenses in myopia management. Longer-term follow-up research has also continued to investigate the effects and safety of D.I.M.S. lenses, with HOYA reporting sustained myopia-control effects over several years.

Why consider MiYOSMART?

MiYOSMART is designed to be an easy, non-invasive option for children who need myopia management. It provides:
  • Clear vision with the child’s prescription
  • A non-invasive approach to myopia management
  • D.I.M.S. Technology developed by HOYA and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
  • Clinical evidence supporting its ability to slow myopia progression
  • A lens that can be fitted like a regular spectacle lens
  • A child-friendly spectacle solution designed for everyday use
Every child’s eyes and prescription are different, so myopia management should always be discussed with an eye care professional.

An extra benefit from HOYA

Children’s prescriptions can change as they grow, which is why HOYA also offers additional support for MiYOSMART wearers. If your child’s prescription changes within the threshold or before one year of the original MiYOSMART purchase, you can purchase a second pair at 50% off. If further prescription changes require additional pairs within the applicable period, the third and fourth pairs are available at 25% off.
